Valle: Local leaders keep March for Meals cooking

Community voice

On March 25, 2014, I once again had the honor of participating in the "March for Meals/Community Champion Campaign" sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America.

March For Meals is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on a local level. Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States promote March For Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. The campaign takes place in the month of March because it was during this month that the law was enacted that included Senior Nutrition Programs in the Older Americans Act.

Community Champions Campaign is a component of March For Meals that utilizes the involvement of local elected officials who deliver meals on one day in March to show their support for their local senior nutrition program. Through the simple action of taking time out of their busy day to help serve a nutritious lunch to seniors, elected officials demonstrate their commitment to the needs of the local elderly.

The York Township Senior Nutrition Program is honored to be partners with the DuPage Senior Citizens Council in the fight against hunger. It is through the Council's efforts that March for Meals/Community Champions Campaign has become such a huge success in York Township.

This year DuPage Senior Citizens Council presented a commemorative plaque to the elected officials who participated in serving meals in our senior dining center or delivering "Meals on Wheels" to homebound seniors.

I want to thank Tasha Wheeler and Donna Atkinson of D.S.C.C. for presenting our commemorative plaques. And, I want to express my appreciation to Lombard President Keith Gianorgio and Villa Park President Deborah Bullwinkel for their participation in March for Meals.

I would also like to thank DuPage County Forest Preserve District 2 Commissioner Joe Cantore not only for his participation in March for Meals but also for his commitment throughout the years to deliver Meals on Wheels on a regular basis. It was a pleasure to ride along with Joe on his regular route, delivering nutritious meals to homebound senior citizens. We are proud to have Commissioner Cantore, President Giagnorio and President Bullwinkel as our partners in the fight against hunger in York Township.

John W. Valle is supervisor of York Township.
