Prep roundup: York baseball takes one from Downers North

After splitting Saturday’s doubleheader against Downers Grove North, York’s baseball team lost 8-1 in the rubber game Wednesday.

Anthony Santos was 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI in a 2-1 loss in the opener. Santos fired a shutout in a 1-0 win in the second game.


IC Catholic

The Knights topped rival Aurora Christian 8-7 on April 25. The next day, Bloomington Central Catholic shut out IC 2-0. IC took advantage of its turf Monday to play through a wet day and win 9-1 against Walther Lutheran.

Riverside Brookfield beat the Trojans 8-2 on Wednesday.



The Dukes split a Saturday doubleheader against a talented Naperville Central squad. Despite leading 8-3 through five innings in the first game, they lost 9-8. York rebounded with an 11-4 win in the second game. Angela Scalzitti was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Abby Solem blasted two home runs and had six RBIs.

Solem went 4-for-4 in an 11-3 win against Richards on Wednesday.

IC Catholic

Jessica Conenna struck out 13 and gave up just four hits in a 1-0 win against Chicago Christian on April 25. Melissa Gonzalez was 3-for-3.

The Knights split a doubleheader with Regina the next day. Conenna was 3-for-3 in a 6-5 loss and was 5-for-5 in a 12-5 victory. She drove in six runs in the second game. The Knights scored 11 runs in the first inning of a 16-1 win against Aurora Christian on Wednesday.


IC Catholic

After losing 5-3 at Rosary on Tuesday, the Knights recovered with a 2-1 win at Marian Central on Wednesday.

Riverside Brookfield beat the Trojans 3-2 on Tuesday.



The Dukes had a strong showing at their own invite on April 25. The 4x200-meter relay took first along with individual winners Matt Plowman (3,200), Reid Smith (high jump and pole vault), Alex Bashqawi (800), Ben Lefley (triple jump) and Adam Teague (200).



Abby Waltz won the pole vault at Glenbard West’s invite on Saturday. Amy Nosek was second in the high jump and the 4x200-meter relay team of Emily Simo, Caily Schwartz, Amanda McGowan and Shante Dansby took third.



The Dukes lost to Neuqua Valley 14-6 and Palatine 17-13 earlier this week.



The Dukes picked up back-to-back wins by defeating St. Francis 17-5 on Saturday and Palatine 10-9 on Monday.



The Dukes traveled to Downers Grove South for a 16-team dual tournament on Saturday. York went 2-2 with wins against Wheaton Warrenville South and Argo and losses against St. Charles North and Jacobs.

Strangely, all four matches were decided by 3-2 scores.

The Trojans swept Riverside Brookfield 7-0 on April 24. Riley DeHaan won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles and Nicolas Silvia and Caleb Hays won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

BOYS GYMNASTICS: York heads to Downers Grove North for the West Suburban Silver meet at 6 p.m. today.

SOFTBALL: York takes a second crack at Downers Grove North at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in a West Suburban Silver road game.
