Lisle business owner has connection to new saint John Paul II

Published: Wednesday, April 30, 2014 6:55 p.m. CST

Pope John Paul II (far left) speaks with altar boys, including Lisle business owner John Zydowicz (far right), while visiting Five Holy Martyrs Church in Chicago in October 1979.

The pope was canonized as a saint Sunday.

Zydowicz, who is now a co-owner of Lisle's John Dough Bakery, said he assisted the pope twice – once in 1979 and on a separate occasion prior to John Paul II's taking the papacy, when he was a cardinal visiting Five Holy Martyrs.
