Addison Trail's Kevin Grygo sets the ball during an April 15 match against Morton. The Blazers struggled at their own invite Saturday and will look to rebound with matches next week.

ADDISON – For the first time this season, Addison Trail’s boys volleyball team is faced with recovering from a surprise setback.

Sure, the Blazers had already lost a match to Downers Grove South on April 22, but that was the team’s first loss of the season and the Mustangs won state last year and appear to be strong once again.

On Saturday the Blazers went 3-2 at their own invite, including losses against Glenbard North, which is winless in the DuPage Valley Conference, and Elk Grove, which AT defeated previously this season. The Blazers were third out of six teams at the tournament.

“To put it bluntly, we had a huge letdown weekend,” AT coach Tom Hubner said. “We made too many errors throughout the day to win.”

Kevin Grygo totaled 107 assists. Alex Dickmann led the team with 46 kills on the day and Anthony Chiaramonte had 38 kills. Jack Vrchota contributed 16 kills in the five matches.

This came on the heels of arguably the Blazers most impressive win of the season, a 25-22, 26-24 victory against previously undefeated Glenbard West on April 24. In that match, Chiaramonte led the Blazers with 12 kills, Dickmann had 11 kills and 10 digs, and Vrchota added eight kills. Grygo was kept busy with 35 assists, a performance which Hubner called his best of the season.

To knock off the Hilltoppers, AT came back from 24-22 down in the second game to win the next four points and the match.

Perhaps the Blazers had the letdown after the big win over the Hilltoppers. Maybe it was just a bad day.

“A little of both, we came out flat and just made too many mistakes,” Hubner said. “I think our focus was off and we had a letdown. Hopefully we learned we have to play better to win.”

AT entered Thursday’s match against St. Charles East with a 15-3 record. Road matches at Leyden (Tuesday) and Bartlett (Thursday) loom next week. Invites at York and Willowbrook are also further ahead on the schedule.
