BERWYN – A 61-year-old Berwyn woman found unconscious in her burning home by firefighters Thursday died as a result of smoke inhalation, according to Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran.
A neighbor's 911 call came in at 11:02 a.m. reporting smoke coming from the rear of the brick bungalow at 1629 Ridgeland Ave. O'Halloran said firefighters arrived and forced there way through a locked front door and began searching for victims.
O'Halloran said Patricia K. Emery, 61, was found unconscious but still breathing on the floor of the home's smoke-filled living room.
Paramedics revived Emery, who stopped breathing in the ambulance as she was rushed to Loyola Medical Center's Burn Unit, where she was pronounced dead about 2 a.m. April 25.
O'Halloran said the fire was largely confined to a bedroom, with very little structural damage caused by fire.
No one else was in the home at the time, but a pet cat was found also found dead in the home.
O'Halloran said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death accidental.
