LA GRANGE PARK – After losing for just the third time this season and being shut out in the process Wednesday, Nazareth was happy to get the bats going again.
The Roadrunners scored three runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth to cruise to a 9-1 win against visiting St. Joseph on Friday.
Joe Nelson gave up just two hits in six innings and had nine strikeouts on the mound. Brandon Gipson led the offensive effort with a 3-for-4 game with two RBIs.
Nazareth (14-3) lost to Sacred Heart-Griffin 5-0 yesterday.
"We're off to a good start," Naz senior first baseman Jake Bartels said. "We just played a really good Sacred Heart-Griffin team. They're solid all the way around. Their pitcher came out and played a solid game and we struggled a bit at the plate, but it was nice to be able to come back today and come back on a good note."
St. Joseph fell to 2-11 with the loss. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Jake Nelson was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
