Villa Park seniors advance in state Spelling Bee

VILLA PARK – State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, partnered with the Association of Illinois Senior Citizens and the Illinois Department on Aging to offer area seniors the opportunity to compete in the Illinois State Senior Spelling Bee on April 18 at the Villa Park Community Recreation Center.

Villa Park resident Kathy Gilroy won the competition, while Kathleen Mothes of Villa Park placed second. Both now advance to regionals for a chance to compete in the state finals at the 2014 Illinois State Fair in August.

The Illinois State Spelling Bee is a statewide competition that provides Illinois adults ages 50 and older the opportunity to showcase their spelling abilities.

The first- and second-place winners of Conroy’s local competition, will now advance to the regional competition, where they will have the ability to qualify for the State Finals at the 2014 Illinois State Fair on Senior Day, Aug. 11.
