NSGL, tenants observe Earth Day with base clean up

Hundreds of sailors and civilians of Naval Station Great Lakes participated in the annual installation spring beautification April 22.

The event, held in honor of Earth Day, encourages personnel to spend a few hours walking around base, picking up trash and debris.

“This is our chance to make the base look good after a long winter,” said Capt. Bill Bulis, Naval Station Great Lakes commanding officer. “It’s great to do this, not only for us personnel who work and live here, but for the hundreds of families that visit us every week after recruit graduation.”

MM1 Gabriel Loop, an event project coordinator, said many hours were put into gathering materials and assigning personnel to specific locations to ensure the base cleanup was a success.

“We started planning for this event weeks in advance,” said Loop. “Once everything was organized, we reached out to leadership around the base to encourage everyone to participate.”

Sailors jumped at the opportunity to spend some time outside, and take part in the event.

“We should all do a little for the earth every day,” said DCFN Richardo James. “It feels good to know that we are helping the environment and maintaining the pleasant atmosphere around base.”
