Downers North badminton wins WSS dual against Glenbard West

Downers Grove South softball bounces back from first loss

Downers Grove South’s softball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday to a high-powered Lockport program, losing 5-3, but that same day the Mustangs also had their way with a strong Peotone team in a 12-1 win.

After the Lockport loss, the Mustangs bounced back with a 4-2 win Monday against Addison Trail. Nicole Bowman and Megan LoBianco each had two RBIs in the win.

LoBianco’s three-run home run in the sixth inning plated the winning run Thursday in the Mustangs’ 6-2 win against Naperville Central. Her blast scored Zahrya McFarland and Caroline Hedgcock. Melissa Orton had a solo home run to start the inning.

Jess Andree was 3-for-3 with a run scored, and Kristin Bialek and Caitlyn Daly each had an RBI. Hedgcock yielded just five hits and two runs in South’s win over the defending DuPage Valley Conference champions. Andree knocked in both runs in a 2-0 win April 16 against Wheaton Warrenville South.

SOFTBALL

Downers Grove North

The Trojans defeated Glenbard East 12-0 Thursday. Ali Woitovich hit a home run, a double, scored twice and had six RBIs. Colleen Honn drove in three runs, and Honn, Kaylee Newstrom and Claire Donahue each scored twice.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Downers Grove North

Competing at the Schaumburg invite Saturday, North lost to the host Saxons and Hinsdale Central before defeating St. Charles East (29-27, 25-23), Rockford East (25-10, 25-11) and Fremd (25-10, 15-9).

One day after defeating York in a West Suburban Silver match, the Trojans lost 25-19, 25-23 April 16 against Wheaton North. North upended York 25-23, 26-24.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Downers Grove North

The Trojans scored 105 points and finished fifth at Saturday’s West Aurora invite.

Downers Grove South

At their own Bud Mohns Invite, the Mustangs scored 40 points and finished fourth in the team standings.

BASEBALL

Downers Grove South

York pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth Thursday to defeat the Mustangs 5-4.

Kyle May went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, Ryan Taylor and Zac Taylor scored twice and Danny Oriente drove in a run.

GIRLS SOCCER

Downers Grove North

The Trojans lost 1-0 against Oswego in an April 17 game, but they rebounded nicely Saturday with a 6-3 against Stevenson.

Westmont

Playing on the road Thursday against Coal City, the Sentinels dropped a 2-0 decision.

Brianna Gilley, Sarah Schlacks and Morgan Arens registered shots on goal during Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Lisle as part of the Timothy Christian tournament.

BADMINTON

Downers Grove North

The Trojans defeated Glenbard West 11-4 April 16 in a West Suburban Silver dual. They were eighth at Saturday’s New Trier invite.

BOYS LACROSSE

Downers Grove co-op

The combined varsity team from Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South lost 11-4 April 15 against Lockport in its last game.

The squad travels to face York in a 7:30 p.m. contest Thursday at Berens Park in Elmhurst.

Games to watch

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South will both compete at South's tournament, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER: The Westmont-Lisle rivalry shifts to the pitch as the Sentinels hit the road for a 4:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
