Will County Board strikes down proposed pay raises

The Will County Board on Thursday effectively rejected pay raises for themselves and other elected county officials.

Speaker Herbert Brooks made four motions to raise compensation for board members, county sheriff, clerk and treasurer. They all died without votes when none of the 25 other board members would second the motions at Thursday's board meeting.

The proposed raises, which got preliminary approval during last week's Executive Committee meeting, would have increased board members' salaries from $23,000 to $24,500, but not until 2016. Another $500 increase would have come in 2017. The board speaker's stipend would have been hiked to $5,000 in 2016.

The sheriff’s salary of $110,000 would have increased after the November election to $120,000, with increases of $2,500 each of the following three years. County treasurer and clerk salaries would have increased from $93,116 to $97,500 in 2016 and to $99,000 in 2017.
