LT soccer advances to PepsiCo Showdown semi

GLENVIEW – Lyons Township girls soccer has everything clicking right now.

The Lions improved to 8-0 with a 2-1 victory at Glenbrook South in a PepsiCo Showdown quarterfinal. LT advances to face defending tournament champions and top seed Buffalo Grove in a semifinal Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.

Emily Lange scored following a corner kick and Katie Dougherty finished after receiving a pass from Grace Nasenbenny. All three goals in the match came in the first half.

"It was back and forth," LT coach Bill Lanspeary said of the wide open match. "Both teams I thought were really dangerous. Then I thought both teams were good defensively, too, so to generate the chances that both teams did was kind of incredible."

The Lions' back line of Catherine King, Sarah Drew, C.C. Holbert and Nasenbenny helped keep the Titans at bay in the second half. Goalkeeper Lidia Breen came up big when needed, especially on a near breakaway in the 60th minute.

LT has been controlling matches with the standout play of Division I-bound seniors Emily Lange and Erin Fitzgerald and forwards like Dougherty and Gabby Hart have taken advantage this season.

"I think we play really well together," Dougherty said. "It all starts with their really accurate pass and they're great about that. Then it's me making those diagonal runs. It's really exciting."

LT was bounced early in this tournament last year and wanted to improve upon that this season.

"Last year we didn't do as well as we hoped and this year we really wanted to come out and do really well for the rest of the season," King said.
