LA GRANGE – Police departments around the area are planning to participate in this year's National Drug Take Back Day.
The departments joining the Drug Enforcement Administration's program, will host the prescription drug collection event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26.
The service, which is free and anonymous, is designed to help prevent theft and pill abuse by getting rid of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
The DEA cannot accept needles, liquids, or sharps.
As of October 2013, more than 647,000 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in at more than 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and local law enforcement partners.
Both flushing drugs down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – typical methods for disposing of unused medicines – pose potential health and safety hazards.
