Prep roundup: Downers Grove North gymnasts second at Hinsdale Central

Downers Grove North’s boys gymnastics team placed second at Hinsdale Central’s Canino invite on Friday with a score of 139.180. Lyons Township won with a 153.80.

Strah Sopcic was second in the all-around (50.10). His best score was a 9.0 on floor exercise.

Tom Brethauer won still rings with a score of 9.0. Sopcic was second (8.90). Sopcic took third on parallel bars (8.60).

BOYS GYMNASTICS

Downers Grove South

Evan Baird placed third in the all-around with a score of 48.10 at Hinsdale Central’s Canino invite on Friday.

As a team, the Mustangs scored a 116.850 and placed 10th.

Baird’s best score was a 9.10 on vault, where he placed third. He was second on the horizontal bar with a score of 8.20.

BASEBALL

Westmont

The Sentinels improved to 1-0 in the I-8 and 7-0-1 overall with a 6-3 win against Wilmington on Friday. Andrew Rosol earned the win on the mound going four innings and allowing two earned runs. Zach Moran earned the save.

Offensively, Joe Donovan and Greg Pietrzak were both 3-for-4 for the Sentinels. Charlie Donovan was 2-for-4 and Tommy Franczak was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice.

Westmont was coming off an 18-0 win against Noble Street Charter on Thursday. Franczak had four hits, two doubles, three RBIs and scored four runs. Pietrzak had a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kevin Melvin earned the win on the mound.

Downers Grove South

Joe Becht drove in three runs on four hits and Zac Taylor, Danny Oriente and Kyle May each had two RBIs in a 13-5 win against Oak Park-River Forest on Thursday. Ryan Jordan earned the pitching win.

SOFTBALL

Westmont

Kiera Aldridge, Maria Prete, Kristen Skala and Lindsay Brockoff each had an RBI as the Sentinels defeated IC Catholic 7-6 on Saturday.

Prete had two hits and scored two runs, and Skala scattered four hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game win in the circle.

Downers Grove North

The Trojans defeated Wheaton Warrenville South 10-0 in five innings on April 8.

Ali Woitovich plated four runs on two hits to lead the offense, and Dale Ryndak yielded just one hit and struck out nine for the pitching win.

GIRLS SOCCER

Downers Grove North

Mary Rounce scored twice and Mary Doro and Emma Krick added goals as the Trojans defeated Riverside Brookfield 4-1 on Friday.

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs played to a 0-0 tie against two-time defending state champion Naperville North on Saturday. South launched seven shots on net, and keepers Katelyn Laraia and Jamie Furio had nine saves to combine for the shutout.

BOYS TENNIS

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs went 1-2 in three tough duals as part of the Benet invite Saturday. South defeated Barrington 4-1 and fell to New Trier (4-1) and Deerfield (3-2).

Three games to watch

Baseball: Downers Grove North welcomes Oak Park at 4:30 p.m. Monday for the final game of a West Suburban Silver series.

Softball: Downers Grove North visits York at 4:30 p.m. Monday to face last year's fourth place state team.

Boys tennis: When Downers Grove South visits Naperville Central at 4:30 p.m. today, it will be tested by one of the top teams in the area.
