Village approves fourth Downers Grove Starbucks

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Village Council unanimously approved a new Starbucks Coffee proposed for Butterfield Road.

The council voted to approve the three zoning and permit items related to the proposed coffee shop at its regular meeting Tuesday without discussion.

The council discussed the proposal previously at the April 8 meeting when the items came up for first reding.

The Starbucks is planned for the parking lot space to the east of Portillo's in the Finley Square Shopping Center in the 1500 block of Butterfield Road, an area council members said April 8 receives heavy amounts of traffic and pedestrians, especially during prime shopping hours.

"I'm just concerned with the pedestrian safety," Commissioner Sean Durkin said at the April 8 meeting. "It just seems like there is so much activity there."

Community Development Director Tom Dabareiner said the petitioner did address the issue of congestion, and village staff believes that it will not be an issue because Starbuck's peak hours differs from the shopping center's peak hours.

Overall, Commissioner Becky Rheintgen supported the project in along with green space the petitioner plans to include, but agreed that traffic is a concern at the nearby intersection of Downers Drive and Butterfield Road.

"Trying to negotiate that stop light from either direction is kind of a nightmare," she said.

Village Manager David Fieldman said the village has future plans to update the traffic signal at the intersection, which could alleviate some traffic concerns. He added that village staff could also work with the shopping center owner regarding improvements to foot and vehicle traffic in the parking lot in general. Village staff also added in its documentation for council that the shopping center doesn't typically have a shortage of parking.

The new Butterfield Road location will be the fourth Starbucks in Downers Grove. In September, the council unanimously approved a new Starbucks planned for 1149 Ogden Ave., which is currently under construction.

Existing Starbucks locations include 5002 Main St. and 76 Ogden Ave.
