Village council considers adding fourth Downers Grove Starbucks

DOWNERS GROVE – Several zoning and permit items related to the proposed Starbucks on Butterfield Road will go before the council for a first reading Tuesday evening.

The Starbucks is planned for the parking lot space to the east of the Portillo's in the Finley Square Shopping Center in the 1500 block of Butterfield Road.

The petitioner is requesting a special use for a drive-thru as well as other procedural items, all of which were unanimously approved by the plan commission, according to village documents.

One resident at a public hearing shared concern about possible congestion the coffee shop could cause in the parking lot, especially during holiday shopping season. Downers Grove Village staff did not share the concern.

"The construction of the proposed Starbucks will have little impact on the shopping center’s parking, particularly due to the difference in peak hours and the significant distance from the Starbucks to the main shopping center," village staff wrote in a report to the council. "The shopping center owners indicated they do not typically have a shortage of parking."

The council will hear the items Tuesday and likely vote on April 15.

If approved, the new Butterfield Road location would be the fourth Starbucks in Downers Grove. In September, the council unanimously approved a new Starbucks planned for 1149 Ogden Ave.

Existing locations include 5002 Main St. and 76 Ogden Ave.
