Raiders top state champs in home opener

GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard South’s baseball team opened up the home portion of its 2014 schedule Mondawith a 3-2 come-from-behind win over defending Class 2A state champion Lisle.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Raiders plated a pair of runs in the frame to go ahead for good.

Will Cornwell went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Tim Marks also notched two hits. Dominic Fazzari worked five innings on the hill, striking out six while giving up just two hits.

Last week, Glenbard South traveled to Myrtle Beach where they posted a record of 3-1 in four games to begin the 2014 season.

The squad wrapped up the trip April 4 with a 6-2 win over Johnson Central (Ky.). Nick Paprota provided the big blow with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Marks had two hits and Cornwell and Joey Atkinson also produced RBIs. That run support was more than enough for Cornwell, who scattered seven hits while striking out four in a complete-game effort on the mound.

Two days earlier, Dylan Brambora tossed a no-hitter as the Raiders defeated Highlands (Ky.), 6-1. Brambora struck out six and walked three in his complete-game effort.

Atkinson and Erik Schuchardt each had doubles to pace the offense with Schuchardt driving in three runs. Andrew Wrona and Fazzari each added an RBI.

On April 1, Glenbard South lost 5-0 to North Bullitt (Ky.). The squad was held to just four hits, with Cornwell notching two of them.

The Raiders kicked off Metro Suburban Conference play Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series with Fenton that was expected to wrap up today.

A nonconference matchup with Wheaton Warrenville South looms Saturday before three consecutive MSC contests against Elmwood Park beginning Monday.
