Prep roundup: Morton baseball sweeps Leyden to open conference
The Lions dropped their first West Suburban Silver series of the season. LT split a doubleheader with Hinsdale Central on Saturday, but dropped the rubber game Monday. Tom Hickey pitched a shutout in the first game to lead to a 5-0 victory. Max Larson, Josh Kuntz and Buck Domabyl had two hits each. LT lost 4-3 in a walk off despite a Charlie Harrigan home run in the second game. The Red Devils won the rubber game 8-2.
Will Kincanon is off to a fantastic start to the season. The Bulldog senior struck out nine while allowing just an unearned run in five innings on the mound in the season opening 9-1 win against Romeoville on April 1. He then homered in both games of a doubleheader sweep against Walther Lutheran (13-1 and 5-2) on Saturday. RB lost to Nazareth on April 2.
Anthony Iniquez and Sergio Villalobos have led the Mustangs to a strong start in the West Suburban Gold. Morton swept Leyden to start 3-0 in the Gold. Iniquez struck out 12 over seven innings in a 6-3 win in game 1. Iniquez was also 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs at the plate. Villalobos was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. In game 2 Villalobos took the mound and struck out seven in a complete game 5-2 victory. Iniquez belted a home run and had two hits. In Monday's finale, Luis Rivera had a quality start with a complete game effort. Rivera struck out eight and didn't allow an earned run in a 5-2 win. Iniquez and Gabriel Orozco each had two RBIs.
The Roadrunners are off to a 7-1 start. Blowout wins against Riverside Brookfield (17-2 on April 2) and St. Francis (11-0 on Saturday) sandwiched a 2-0 loss to Ridgewood on Friday. Jake Bartels and Peter Minella earned the wins on the mound. Matt Flach, Drew Dunker, Brandon Bossard and Ryan Kramer had two hits each against Francis. Nazareth also beat Glenbrook North 6-3 on Monday.
Tom Planek was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, but the Friars lost to Clemente 8-6 on Saturday.
The Chargers lost to St. Francis 12-3 on Friday.
The Lions had to wait until Saturday to play for the first time this season, but came out of the gates firing in a doubleheader sweep of Riverside Brookfield. LT won game 1 10-4 with a 3-for-3 day from Courtney Petrosius. The Lions dominated game 2 25-1. Stefanie D'Anna, Riley Frisbie and Maggie Vacchiano each had four hit games.
The Friars dropped a doubleheader to Bishop McNamara on Saturday. Jenna Cairo and Ashley Parenti each had three hits in a 15-6 game 1 loss, but the Friars stranded 12 runners. Fenwick lost game 2 10-0.
The Bulldogs' home opener was a 7-0 win against Guerin on Thursday. Last year's Class 3A runner-up Hinsdale Central them thumped RB 4-0.
Tania Paez scored twice and Katia Orozco and Lisbeth Marin each scored once in a 4-1 victory against Addison Trail on April 1. They lost to Nazareth 2-0 on Saturday.
The Roadrunners bounced back from a 2-1 loss to St. Edward on Thursday by knocking off Morton 2-0 on Saturday. Marri Gragnani had the game-winner early in the second half and Kelly Renehan added to the lead with a penalty kick.
Reavis beat the Bulldogs 25-14, 13-25, 25-21 on Thursday. Mike Chaney had a career-best 16 kills. Danny Nava had 14 assists and Ben Brondos had 11.
The Roadrunners picked up a third straight win to start the season by defeating Thornton Fractional North 25-16, 25-13 on Friday. Brady Ryan had 14 assists, Dan Hubert had six kills and Allen Bell added three blocks.
BOYS WATER POLO
The Lions went 1-3 at a loaded York tournament over the weekend. LT beat Niles West 8-2 on Friday. Saturday they lost to powerful teams: tournament champion St. Louis University High (8-7), Loyola (5-4) and Fenwick (8-2).
After taking spring break off, the Bulldogs returned with wins over Bremen (11-4) and Payton (12-5) to improve to 6-5 overall.
The Friars went 3-1 at York's tournament over the weekend. Fenwick beat New Trier (13-4) and Mundelein (13-8) on Friday before losing to St. Louis University High 8-7 in overtime on Saturday. Fenwick knocked off Lyons Township 8-2 in the finale.
GIRLS WATER POLO
LT went 2-2 at the Fenwick Invite over the weekend with wins against New Trier and Mundelein and losses to Fenwick and Stevenson.
The Bulldogs beat Lincoln-Way West 14-8 and Hoffman Estates 12-7 last week and lost to Payton 12-6. Dana Callanan scored five goals against West.
The Friars won their own tournament with four wins on Saturday. They knocked off Lyons Township (9-6), New Trier (7-4), St. Ignatius (9-6) and Mother McAuley (8-6).
Alex Bakalich took first at the No. 1 singles spot and the Bulldogs won their own invite Saturday. Erika Sterner took first at No. 3 singles. Paige Brown and Laura Pellizzari won No. 3 doubles.
The Lions went 4-0 to win their own tournament on Saturday. LT defeated Lockport, Maine South, Homewood Flossmoor and Downers Grove all by double digits.
The Lions edged Fenwick 11-10 on Saturday.
