Baseball roundup: Struebing's effort helps Tigers top Benet
Behind the complete game pitching effort of Brett Struebing, Wheaton Warrenville South’s baseball team clipped Benet 3-2 on Monday.
Struebing scattered five hits while striking out seven.
Offensively, Brian Summers, Baylor Holmes and Austin Polezoes each drove in a run while Ben Flores and Eric Giltz had two hits apiece.
Scoring eight runs in the fourth inning, the Spartans cruised to a 12-0 win over Aurora Christian on Monday.
Christian Kuzemka had two hits, including a grand slam, and finished with five RBIs. Zack Prociuk was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Chris Smith and Jason Sullivan also had two hits each.
Sullivan also allowed just two hits in recording the win on the mound.
St. Francis had lost 11-0 to Nazareth on Saturday, one day after beating St. Joseph 12-3.
In the win over the Chargers, Nick Dama and Prociuk had three RBIs apiece and Brett Whelton drove in two. Jake Radel was the winning pitcher, tossing five innings.
Two days earlier, St. Francis concluded its trip to Disney World with an 8-0 win over Shiocton (Wis.) as Sullivan clubbed a grand slam. Michael O’Keefe earned the win, allowing just two hits.
Also that day, St. Francis beat Elgin Academy 15-2 in six innings as Nick Dama and Radel each had a home run.
On April 1, St. Francis defeated Fulvanna County (Va.) 5-4. Matt Kelly recorded the victory, pitching four and two-third innings of scoreless baseball and Will Purdom and Radel each had two hits.
That same day, the Spartans lost 4-3 to Bullitt East (Ky.).
The Warriors ended their spring break trip to Florida with a 4-3 win over Tampa Catholic April 3. The squad scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to snatch the victory.
Earlier in the day, Wheaton Academy dropped an 8-0 decision to Eastern (N.J.). Bryce Sandberg, Luke Kram and Tyler Partykevich all had hits.
The Warriors split a pair of games on April 2, beating Joba Academy (Fla.) 5-3 and losing 11-4 to Liberty Union (Ohio).
In the victory, Kram earned the win on the mound and he also doubled and had an RBI at the plate.
Wheaton Academy opened the 2014 season with a 4-3 decision over Maple Grove (Minn.) on April 1.
