Barrington 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard gives departure notice

BARRINGTON – The Barrington 220 School District announced the unexpected June 30 departure of Superintendent Tom Leonard Tuesday.

In a letter to Barrington 220 families, Leonard wrote that after serving the district as their seven-year superintendent and six-year Barrington High School principal, he has been presented with the opportunity to become superintendent of the the Eanes Independent School District in Austin, Texas.

"The offer was too good to refuse," Leonard wrote. "Eanes, like Barrington 220, is one of the nation's highest-performing pre-K-12 public school systems. After 33 years as an educator in Illinois, if I am going to leave here and resume my career in Texas Hill Country, Eanes is the place, and this is the time."

In response to Leonard's announcement, the Barrington 220 Board of Education released its own statement Tuesday.

Board members wrote that they wish Leonard well is his "exciting career change."

According to the statement, board members have less than 12 weeks to "begin what will be an accelerated by thorough process" in searching for a new superintendent.

"Our goal is to attract the next superintendent before the end of this school year," the statement reads.

Board members said district families can expect an update soon, as well as opportunities for their input.

Leonard quoted English poet Geoffrey Chaucer in stating that "all good things must come to an end."

"I am proud of what we have accomplished together in Barrington 220," Leonard said. "I am grateful for a few more weeks."
