Wheaton Police Department warns residents about phishing fraud scheme

WHEATON – The Wheaton Police Department is warning residents about a phishing fraud scheme, according to a city news release.

The department has received information from several residents about calls and emails appearing to be from the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service that include a false case number and the following message:

"Your reported 2013 income is flagged for review due to a document processing error. Your case has been forwarded to the Taxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance. To avoid delays processing your 2013 filing, contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance."

The recipient is then prompted to follow links asking for personal information.

Taxpayers should not respond to the calls or emails or click the links, and should instead forward emails to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov or call the IRS customer service line at 1-800-829-4933.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is a legitimate IRS organization that helps taxpayers, but does not initiate contact by email, texting or social media.
