CICERO – Morton's offense has plenty of power and showed it off in the second game of a doubleheader against Reavis on Saturday.
The Mustangs blasted two home runs and six doubles in a 13-3 five-inning win against the Rams after dropping the first game 8-5 in eight innings.
Sophomore Karina Madera homered in each game, including a moonshot grand slam in the first inning of the second game. It was the first grand slam of her high school career.
"It felt really nice," Madera said. "It's bases loaded, let's just get one out there."
Madera was 3-for-4 in the second game with two doubles to go with the grand slam. Her RBI double in the fifth inning gave Morton the clinching 10-run lead.
Susan Ghuneim hit a two-run home run in the third as part of another four-run inning.
The Mustangs are 1-2, but finally got the offense that coach Marcey Wilus expects out of the team.
"Our offense is coming around and our defense we still got certain things that we got to work on," Wilus said. "We are improving, which is great to see that we're progressing forward. This is a win that we needed for our confidence and just keep building from there."
