Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week: Greg Pietrzak
Greg Pietrzak is an everyday player for Westmont's baseball team and has helped the Sentinels to a solid start this season.
Why Pietrzak was selected:
Pietrzak earned his first win of the season in a 4-1 victory Saturday against Rauner Prep.
Greg Pietrzak was a key starting pitcher in Westmont’s rotation last season, and nothing has changed this spring. He got the nod in the season opener March 21 and got a no-decision after throwing three innings. His second start came Saturday against Rauner Prep, and he allowed just one hit and fanned nine to earn his first win in the Sentinels’ 4-1 victory. The left-handed throwing Pietrzak, the Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about going so long between starts and his role on the team.
What was it like going so long between games?
I would say the hardest thing was playing your first game and then having to wait. Once you play your first game, you want to just keep playing and playing. The weather has been just crazy, but coach has done a good job of getting ready in practice.
How would you describe your role on this team?
It’s all about practice, helping people out, showing them what we did from last year’s experience and being a good role model. In terms of leadership, I’d say everybody from last year is kind of a leader on this team and helping everyone build our team.
When you don’t pitch you play in the field. Which do you like better?
I’d say pitching. I like pitching better. I feel more alive on the mound. When you have a big rotation, once you get your turn, it’s a good feeling.
