Prep roundup: Westmont baseball adds two wins over weekend

Thanks in part to a school-sponsored spring break trip to Spain, Westmont’s baseball team was down to just a handful of players last week.

Yet the Sentinels were still able to post a 2-0-1 record and entered play this week with a 4-0-1 mark.

“It’s been a good start for us,” head coach DJ Cocks said. “A lot of guys were gone all last week. We had 10 or 11 guys and we were able to survive without a loss.”

A 3-3 tie against St. Edward on April 2 (in a game called due to darkness) preceded a doubleheader sweep of Rauner Prep on Saturday. Westmont won those games 4-1 and 11-1.

Greg Pietrzak allowed one hit and struck out nine over six innings in Game 1, and Anthony Alessi yielded just three hits over four innings in Game 2.

Michael Geduldig had the game-winning RBI in the opener, and Charlie Donovan’s grand slam and Tommy Franczak’s three-run homer provided much of the run support in the nightcap.

SOFTBALL

Downers Grove North

In three games at the Providence invite over the weekend, the Trojans went 2-1. Wins against Andrew (2-0 on Friday) and Glenbard West (12-0 on Saturday) bookended a 4-0 loss against Manteno.

Facing West Suburban Silver conference foe Glenbard West (in what was a nonconference game), Dale Ryndak surrendered just one hit and struck out six to earn the pitching win. Ali Woitovich went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Kaylee Newstrom and Zoe Varsbergs each drove in two runs.

Newstrom and Woitovich had RBIs and Katie Polaski and Claire Donahue scored the runs in the win against Andrew.

GIRLS SOCCER

Downers Grove South

Autumn Rasmussen scored two first-half goals and had a hat trick in the Mustangs’ 8-0 win against Joliet Catholic on April 2.

Meghan Riordan scored twice in the second half, and Miyax Leon, (assisted by Tess Grannan), Jenny Adams, and Kelly McCarthy (assisted by Rasmussen) also scored. Katelyn Laraia had the shutout in the net.

Westmont

The Sentinels were on the short end of a 6-0 contest against Elmwood Park on March 31, their most recent game prior to Monday’s contest against Fenton.

BOYS TENNIS

Downers Grove South

Competing at the Edwardsville invite over the weekend, the Mustangs took top honors after winning all four team duals.

South defeated Triad 5-0 and Normal U-High 3-2 on Friday, and followed that up with victories against Edwardsville (3-2) and Belleville East (6-2) on Saturday.

Tony Leto went undefeated at No. 1 singles, as did Christian San Andres at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 doubles, seniors Mitch Plys and Alan Bui were perfect on the weekend. Bui was named tourney MVP and Plys earned Mustang Player of the Week honors.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs finished sixth in the gold division at Wheaton Warrenville South’s Tiger Classic tournament after losing 19-25, 25-17, 26-24 against Brother Rice in the fifth place match on Saturday.

Earlier in the day South split matches against Naperville Central (23-25, 25-17, 25-16 loss) and Barrington (25-21,25-20 win).

Senior setter Jordan Pawlicki was named to the all-tournament team.
