Prep roundup: West softball shows well at Providence

Behind a complete-game, five-hitter by Taylor Langtry, the Glenbard West softball team defeated the host Celtics 2-1 April 4 as part of the Providence Catholic tournament.

Langtry struck out 11, allowing just a single run in the sixth inning.

Offensively, Jackie Feliciano and Caylin Potter each had an RBI.

A day later, the Hilltoppers lost 2-1 to Lockport and 12-0 to Downers Grove North as part of the same event.

Langtry tossed another complete-game against Lockport, yielding four hits while striking out six. Shelley Warmolts had three hits and Sarah Park totaled two hits and an RBI.


Glenbard South

The Raiders began the new season Monday with a 7-3 nonconference loss to Geneva.

Ashton Cattenhead had two hits for Glenbard South and Gianna Marra knocked in a run.

Wheaton Academy

Plating eight runs in the third inning, the Warriors went on to beat Walther Christian 15-1 Monday. Angela Graff had a double, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the offense.

Inside the pitching circle, Michelle Ridderhoff, Autumn Ratliff and Andi Pivaronas combined to allow just four hits.


St. Francis

Scoring eight runs in the fourth inning, the Spartans cruised Monday to a 12-0 win against Aurora Christian.

Christian Kuzemka had two hits, including a grand slam, and finished with five RBIs. Zack Prociuk was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs and Chris Smith and Jason Sullivan also had two hits each.

Sullivan also allowed just two hits in recording the win on the mound.

St. Francis lost 11-0 to Nazareth on Saturday, one day after beating St. Joseph 12-3.

In the win against the Chargers, Nick Dama and Prociuk had three RBIs apiece and Brett Whelton drove in two. Jake Radel was the winning pitcher, tossing five innings.

Two days earlier, St. Francis concluded its trip to Disney World with an 8-0 win against Shiocton (Wis.) as Sullivan clubbed a grand slam. Michael O’Keefe earned the win, allowing just two hits.

Also that day, St. Francis beat Elgin Academy 15-2 in six innings as Nick Dama and Radel each had a home run.

On April 1, St. Francis defeated Fulvanna County (Va.) 5-4. Matt Kelly recorded the victory, pitching four and two-third innings of scoreless baseball and Will Purdom and Radel each had two hits. That same day, the Spartans lost 4-3 to Bullitt East (Ky.).


St. Francis

The Spartans defeated Geneva 25-14, 25-13 Monday as Jeff Jendryk produced 10 kills and seven blocks.

Robert Smith dished out 23 assists, John Messa had eight digs, Dan Zurawski finished with five kills and Joe Denny added four kills.
