IC Catholic junior pitcher Jessica Conenna helped the Knights win three games in a row last weekend with contributions as both a hitter and pitcher. The Northern Illinois recruit started all three games as a pitcher and was 6-for-8 with two doubles and four RBIs at the plate. The Knights entered Thursday’s game against Proviso West with a 5-0 record. Conenna, this week’s the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the team’s hot start, her college commitment and the team’s goal for the season.
Did you expect the team to get off to such a winning start?
We expected to go 5-0. We’re playing teams we know we can beat. We just wanted to get the feel of it.
What are your expectations this season?
We want to make a deep run in the playoffs. We have a lot of core people back so we hope to go further than last year.
What made you want to commit to Northern Illinois?
I knew I wanted to stay close to home and it’s only an hour drive away. I was at a camp in Peoria where a ton of Division I schools were at. Coach [Christina] Sutcliffe helped me with my pitching. I was assigned to her team when we played games. She has so much energy and she brings so much intensity to games. I wanted to go where the coach was a pitcher, and she was.
