WESTOSHA, Wis. – Downers Grove South’s softball team had a successful and memorable weekend.
The Mustangs swept a doubleheader against Westosha, the defending Wisconsin state champions, winning 9-4 and 11-0 to start the season.
Not only did the Mustangs prove themselves against some top-flight competition, the win in the first game was career victory No. 600 for head coach Ron Havelka.
“It was no big deal,” Havelka said of the milestone. “We just wanted to get two wins. Going 2-0, that was definitely the bigger thing.”
Megan LoBianco had three hits and three RBIs, Rebekah Ondracek also plated three runs and Melissa Orton had a three-run double as part of South’s four-run third inning. Jess Andree added a solo home run.
Pitcher Caroline Hedgcock struck out 11 batters to earn the win.
South (2-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2 and cruised to victory. Kristin Lea and Dana Kremer plated two runs apiece and Payton Buresch earned the pitching win.
“Overall, it’s just a nice start,” said Havelka, whose team is off until Saturday’s doubleheader against DeKalb. “We have a lot of depth this year with kids coming off the bench who can help us and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”
