CLC trustees pass tuition increase

GRAYSLAKE – After keeping tuition at the same rate since Fall 2011, the College of Lake County board of trustees approved increasing in-district tuition by $6 per credit hour in the 2014-2015 academic year and an additional $8 per credit hour in the 2015-2016 academic year. A $3 per credit hour increase in comprehensive fees also was approved, going into effect for the 2014-2015 academic year. The fee increase will be applied to providing more services to help students succeed and graduate and to funding student activities. The action was taken at Tuesday night’s regularly scheduled board meeting held at the Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills.“For the past two years, we’ve held the line on tuition and fees while making cuts in discretionary spending and eliminating redundancies. We will continue to look for additional cost savings and better efficiencies,” said Board Chairman Amanda Howland after the meeting. “However, with rising costs and declining enrollment, we must take the difficult step of raising tuition. Even with the tuition increases approved tonight, we will be required to cut about $2.3 million in expenditures over the next two years. While administration looks for further cost savings, the board will continue to tighten its own expenditures.”In a presentation on the tuition and fee increases, David Agazzi, vice president for administrative affairs, said that factors such as flat state funding and a continued slow-down in tax revenue are reducing revenue projections.CLC’s combined tuition and fee rate for the 2014-2015 academic year will be $121 per credit hour and $129 per credit hour for the 2015-2016 academic year. In comparison, three neighboring community colleges have set higher rates for 2014-2015. Tuition and fees at College of Du Page will be $144 per credit hour; at Harper College, $126.25; and at Moraine Community College, $123. The average tuition and fees at Chicago area community colleges next year will be $120.42 per credit hour.In addition to raising tuition and fees for in-district students, the trustees also increased the rates for out-of-district and out-of-state students. Out-of-district tuition and fees will be $278   in 2014-2015 and $299 in 2015-2016. Out-of-state tuition and fees will be $366.50 in 2014-2015 and $394.50 in 2015-2016.
