DOWNERS GROVE – Angelo Caputo's Fresh Market plans to move into the vacant Dominick's grocery that closed on Ogden Avenue this winter.
The Elmwood Park-based family grocery chain took over the Dominick's lease at 42 Ogden Road and aims to finish interior renovations to open the 72,000-square foot store by late May, according to Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Michael Cassa.
"We're very pleased about being able to fill that store in a short period of time," Cassa said.
The announcement is good news for the half-dozen other businesses in the strip mall, including a Sally Beauty Supply, Hallmark and Oberweis Dairy, he said.
"That's an anchor store for that shopping center, and an anchor store can make or break a shopping center," Cassa said.
Caputo's puts a large focus on the "fresh market" portion of its name, Cassa said, offering expanded deli, meats and produce sections in addition to normal grocery selections.
The Caputo's announcement comes almost exactly three months after Dominick's parent company Safeway closed any of its 72 stores that were not purchased by competitors. Several were bought by Mariano’s Fresh Market.
This will be the eighth Caputo's location, joining Addison, Blooomingdale, Elmwood Park, Hanover Park, Naperville, Elgin and a soon-to-be opened store in Carol Stream.
