Morton's Karina Madera makes contact in a game against Hinsdale South last season. The sophomore figures to be a mainstay in the middle of the Mustangs' lineup this spring.

The Mustangs have a solid core back from a team that won a regional and contended for the West Suburban Gold title much of last season.

Senior catcher Jenna Boyajian is back behind the plate after tearing an ACL in the middle of last season. Fellow seniors Susan Ghuneim and Liz Heredia are also returning starters.

Sophomore Karina Madera brings back her powerful bat to the middle of the lineup. She filled in at catcher while Boyajian was hurt, but should see more time at first base this season. Sophomore Jenna Montoya, who can play infield and outfield, adds another power bat to the lineup.

"Building off from last year, we're really strong," first-year coach Marcey Wilus said. "We're definitely a different team from last year. Our offense is I think better this year."

Junior Alyssa LaCour and senior Gabby Alainis will share pitching duties after the graduation of Alyssa Galasso. Wilus said while Galasso was a control and movement pitcher, LaCour and Alainis have more velocity.

Wilus takes over for Tom Eukovich after being the volunteer assistant with the team last season. She hopes the team can win conference and push deeper in the postseason than last year's sectional semifinal defeat.
