Fenwick softball geared up for another deep playoff run

Published: Wednesday, March 26, 2014 11:00 a.m. CDT

After winning a sectional and coming incredibly close to beating eventual Class 3A champ Glenbard South in the supersectional, Fenwick has high expectations this spring.

Much of the core of that team is back, including three college-bound seniors. Pitcher/third baseman Jessica Mrozek signed with James Madison, shortstop Ashley Parenti is bound for Loyola and centerfielder and leadoff hitter Jenna Cairo is headed to Lewis University.

On top of that, the top pitcher last year, Valerie Perrelli, is back in the circle. Perrelli and Mrozek will share pitching and third base duties.

"We got a great nucleus coming back," coach Mike Marrese said. "It's a nice roster where everybody will be able to contribute."

The Friars, who move up to Class 4A this spring, also return seniors Maggie Horn, Michelle Lang and Michaela Monaco. Senior outfielder Nicole Tristano wasn't up with varsity last year, but should play a big role.

"I only have two goals and my goals are to win conference and to win state," Marrese said. "We've got the program back to where it was in the late 90s and people now know that we're a presence."
