RIVERSIDE – On Saturday, a Riverside police officer was conducting a traffic stop for speeding in the 3900 block of Harlem Avenue in Lyons, according to police reports.

The officer conducting the stop put the driver ticketed for speeding under arrest for driving on a suspended license and placed her in the back of the squad car. While interviewing the driver’s passenger to see if she could drive the car, a 2011 Kia struck the police officer’s squad car from behind.

The officer checked on the arrested driver, who said she was fine. However, paramedics were requested to the scene to check her out for injuries.

Police reported that the squad car was in the southbound lane against the curb with lights flashing when it was struck. When the officer approached the driver of the Kia, he noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath, according to police reports. Lyons police officers were requested to the scene to investigate the crash and possibly drunk driver.

Lyons police arrested Evelyn Gimenez, 58, of Lyons for driving under the influence and other charges.
