WEST CHICAGO – A single-family residence suffered significant damage in a fire Thursday in West Chicago, according to the West Chicago Fire Protection District.
Calling the house a "total loss," Deputy Chief Dennis Keefe said the fire spread throughout the house in the 900 block of South Gates Street after beginning in the basement. The fire reached the first and second floors, as well as the roof, Keefe said.
Most of the belongings within the residence were lost in the fire, he said.
West Chicago fire officials received a call for the fire at about 5:08 p.m. The residents had evacuated the home without injury before fire personnel arrived, Keefe said.
The West Chicago Fire Protection District was assisted by firefighters from Bartlett, Batavia, Carol Stream, Fermilab, Geneva, Naperville, St. Charles, Warrenville, Wheaton and Winfield.
The fire was brought under control in about an hour, Keefe said.
The cause of the fire does not appear suspicious, but the incident remains under investigation, he said.
