LOMBARD – A longtime Lombard resident was honored Thursday night for more than 65 years of loyal service to the village.
Lombard officials recognized John Egan and proclaimed March 21, 2014 "John Egan Day" in the village. Egan, 90, smiled as a lengthy list of his accomplishments were read, and then thanked the village he has called home since 1948.
"I love you all – it's been a pleasure to serve on your behalf," said Egan, addressing the board room and residents watching at home.
Among his extensive list of achievements, Egan was instrumental in the Jaycees, the Lombard Park District, the Lombard Historical Society, and was named the Lombard Man of the Year in 1967.
"John has obviously set the gold standard for getting involved in your community," Lombard President Keith Giagnorio said. "One thing John has always done is made Lombard better today than it was yesterday."
"Thank you. Those are only two words, but we mean them so much."
Speaking about his decades of volunteer service, Egan highlighted the importance of helping others.
"It can be such fun," he said. "I appreciate your friendship and the chance to serve."
