Wood Dale Alderman Christine Winger will take on Democratic candidate Jenny Burke in the General Election for Illinois House District 45, after winning the Republican nomination in Tuesday's primary, according to preliminary election results from DuPage County.
In a tight race, Winger beat out candidate Seth Lewis of Bartlett, 37.7 percent to 32.5 percent, according to initial results. Daniel Brinkman of Carol Stream received 21.7 percent of the vote, while T.J. Lewis of Bartlett received 8 percent, results stated.
Burke was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
"I am feeling good," Winger said. "It was a hard race."
She expected it to be a close race, and that's what happened, she said.
Winger knocked on doors throughout the district to engage in face-to-face contact with voters, and she said she thought that strategy helped her campaign.
However, she acknowledged that all the candidates in the race worked hard.
Winger has experience with budgets that she hopes to take with her to Springfield. During her time with the Wood Dale City Council, she has helped to keep the city budget in the black for 11 years, she said.
"Voters have heard my message, and I think that's what created the win," said Winger, who said the work of her campaign team also was a major factor in her success.
As Winger moves along to November's General Election, her plans include reaching out to Republican voters in the 45th District, as well as others who have supported her, regardless of their political party.
She also will build off the relationships she developed with her fellow Republican candidates for the 45th District.
For their part, those candidates said they are ready to show their support for her.
"I think she'll do a fine job representing our party in the General Election," said Brinkman, adding he's happy to help in any way that he can.
T.J. Lewis said Winger can expect his support.
"We're looking forward to seeing her do well in the General Election," he said.
Seth Lewis could not immediately be reached for comment.
