BENSENVILLE – Courtesy of a 3-2 win against the Maine Township team Sunday, the Glenbard hockey team advanced to tonight’s Blackhawks Cup Co-op state championship game at the United Center.
The squad, which is comprised of players from Glenbard West, Glenbard South, Glenbard East and Glenbard North, will take on Waubonsie at 8:45 p.m. at the United Center in Chicago.
Glenbard got goals from Matt Letmanski (Glenbard West), Nick Pietro (Glenbard North) and Sam Weiss (Glenbard South) in its semifinal victory, while Joel Mayo (Glenbard West) notched 29 saves in goal.
The team advanced to the semis with a 6-5 overtime win against Lincoln-Way in a quarterfinal game March 12.
Pietro scored a pair of goals in the quarterfinal, including the game-winner in the extra session, while Chris Conklin (Glenbard West), Kevin Gould (Glenbard West), Letmanski and Weiss also found the back of the net.
On March 8, Glenbard beat PREP (Palatine-Rolling Meadows - Elk Grove-Prospect) 5-1 behind a hat-trick from Letmanski. Gould and Patrick Mullally (Glenbard South) also scored and Mayo made 13 saves in goal.
For the season, Matt Bosler (Glenbard North) leads the team with 53 goals and 59 assists. Pietro scored 44 goals while adding 30 assists and Letmanski has totaled 25 goals and 21 assists. Bosler was named varsity all-conference in the Illinois West this season.
Glenbard is 32-20-2 on the season heading into the championship game.
