Why Lyons was selected:
Lyons qualified for state in the 3-point Showdown after making 12 out of 15 shots in 45 seconds at the Bartlett sectional.
York senior guard Sean Lyons kept the Dukes’ winter sports season going for another week by advancing to state in the 3-point Showdown, matching Megan Backman’s appearance on the girls side. He made 12 shots to finish first at the Bartlett sectional. He competed Thursday at Peoria’s Carver Arena for the Class 4A preliminaries and is already gearing up for volleyball season. Lyons, this week’s the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about his preparation for the state competition and the season in general.
What was your preparation for the shootout?
We do a lot of shooting during the year with the team. Once the season was over I got a little shooting in. I didn’t have to do anything different. The cool thing was that the team came out and watched. We had almost the whole team there for my 45 seconds.
Did you have to change your shot at all?
It’s a little different. I just keep everything the same. I just try to take my whole shot. You have to go a little quicker. As long as you don’t slow down you’re fine.
Do you have any favorite memories of the season?
It was a great senior year. We were really close [as a team]. We all had each others’ backs. It was really cool. There’s not one favorite memory.
