Meet the boys basketball all-area south team

Players from Benet, Bolingbrook, DGN, DGS, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South, Lemont, Lisle and Westmont represented

The boys basketball postseason is nearing its end with state finals for Class 3A and Class 4A taking place this weekend. That means it’s time to take a look at the 2013-14 boys basketball all-area team.

Barret Benson

School: Hinsdale South

Year: Sophomore

Impact: A tough post player who is drawing college interest, Benson nearly averaged a double-double with a team-high 12.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Was West Suburban Gold all-conference and all-tournament at both Hinsdale Central and DeKalb.

Devin Blake

School: Downers Grove North

Year: Sophomore

Impact:In his first season playing varsity ball, this sophomore did a little bit of everything for the Trojans and topped the team with 12.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He earned West Suburban Silver all-conference honors.

Gage Davis

School: Bolingbrook

Year: Senior

Impact: With his solid range and all-around playmaking ability, Davis was second on the team with 13 points per game and third with two assists per game. The IPFW recruit was SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conference and all-tournament at McDipper.

Jeremy Glavanovits

School: Lisle

Year: Senior

Impact: A physical presence in the paint, this forward was second on the team at 10.5 points per game and led the Lions with 8.1 rebounds per contest. Also shot 63 percent from the free throw line while taking a team-leading 138 foul shots.

Chase Hamilton

School: Hinsdale Central

Year: Senior

Impact:Perhaps better known as the football team’s quarterback and as a future college tennis player, Hamilton made a big impact on the basketball court with his 12.7 points per game (second on the team) and was named West Suburban Silver all-conference.

John Kelly

School: Westmont

Year: Senior

Impact: The Sentinels’ leading scorer (11.6 points per game) and rebounder (5.8 per game) shot over 50 percent from inside the arc and was Interstate Eight second team all-conference, was named to the I-8 all-tournament team and was voted team MVP this season.

Prentiss Nixon

School: Bolingbrook

Year: Junior

Impact: Watching Nixon in action, it’s easy to see why he is a prized college prospect. Offense comes effortlessly, and he paced the Raiders with 15.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. He was named SouthWest Suburban Blue all-conferenc and all-tournament at the McDipper.

Sean O’Mara

School: Benet

Year: Senior

Impact:The chants of ‘Over rated’ emanating from opposing student sections don’t faze him, and don’t seem to apply anyway. The Xavier recruit, East Suburban Catholic all-conference and Proviso West all-tournament selection is Benet’s all-time leading scorer and was averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds at the start of the playoffs.

Matt Rafferty

School: Hinsdale Central

Year: Junior

Impact: This 6-foot-7 forward has a well-rounded post game, can hit from long range (16 3-pointers made) and sinks his free throws (75 percent). The West Suburban Silver all-conference player led Central with 18.1 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

Danny Spinuzza

School: Downers Grove South

Year: Senior

Impact: Spinuzza did it all for the Mustangs. The team’s primary ball handler shot dished out 3.6 assists per game, shot 69 percent from the foul line and averaged 14.1 points per game. He was named West Suburban gold all-conference.

Mike Wisz

School: Lemont

Year: Senior

Impact:In his third year on the varsity this winter, Wisz took over as the Indians go-to player and led the Indians in scoring. A long-range shooter who also has the ability to get to the basket and finish or draw contact, this senior went over the 1,000-point plateau for his career this season.
