Late run sends Montini girls to state final

NORMAL – For a while it seemed like history was repeating itself for the Montini girls basketball team.

The Broncos trailed Burlington Central by three points in the fourth quarter before an 11-0 run turned the tables and put the game away. Montini won 34-26 to advance to the Class 3A final to be played Saturday at 2 p.m. against Joliet Catholic, which defeated Quincy Notre Dame 70-59.

"I think our girls started to think about last year and got nervous," Montini coach Jason Nichols said in the postgame interview on the IHSA broadcast.

Last year Montini was upset in a state semifinal. When Burlington Central led 24-21 with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter, it looked like they could come up short again. The Broncos' run continued into the final minute of the game and by the time Burlington Central made a layup to cut the lead to six, the game was practically decided.

Kelly Karlis was Montini's only double digit scorer with 10 points.
