Patrick Maki, of Lindenhurst, holds a check for $250,000 that he received for winning the lottery.

LINDENHURST – “When I saw that I matched all 12 numbers, my heart started racing and I actually got dizzy,” said Patrick Maki when he presented his winning Hit or Miss ticket at the Illinois Lottery Prize Center in Des Plaines. The lucky Lindenhurst resident won $250,000 when he hit the first 12 numbers Feb. 18 during a Hit or Miss drawing.

Later that same night, Maki checked the winning Hit or Miss numbers on illinoislottery.com. He woke everyone in the house to tell them he won, he said.

“I’ve often joked with my family that I was going to win the lottery, so when I actually won they didn’t believe me,” Maki said. Maki, 24, lives with his parents and two siblings. He plans to share his Hit or Miss prize with them, he said.

His plans for the windfall also include paying off student loans. Maki, currently unemployed, attained a bachelor of arts in marketing and business administration at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

“I financed my entire education and had no idea my student loans would be so high after college," he said. "Because of this lottery win I can pay them off completely."

The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Sam’s Mobil, 2200 E. Grand Ave., in Lindenhurst. The retailer received a bonus of $2,500 – one percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.
