Prep roundup: Montini wrestling wins 7th straight title

The Montini wrestling team claimed its seventh straight team dual state title over the weekend.

The Broncos won the Class 2A dual team state title Saturday in Bloomington by winning three duals, all by a wide margin. In addition to being the seventh straight title for Montini, it was the 12th state title overall for the dominant program.

In the quarterfinal, Montini defeated Washington 50-18. The next match was a 57-9 win over Cahokia in a semifinal. The Broncos finished off the championship by defeating Geneseo 49-21. Dylan Duncan, Kegan Calkins, Vince Turk, Chris Garcia, Xavier Montalvo and Michael Johnson won three matches at state.


Glenbard East

The Rams finished the season 5-22 after losing to Bartlett in a regional quarterfinal at Morton on Monday. The Hawks beat East 72-56.


The Broncos defeated host Genoa-Kingston in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal 59-46 Monday. Montini was led by Jack Brady’s 16 points. The next day the Broncos lost to Sycamore 83-49, despite 24 points from senior forward Matt Brachmann. Montini finished the season with a 12-16 record.


A 2-25 season came to an end for the Warriors after a 68-33 loss to Wheaton North in a regional quarterfinal at Elk Grove on Monday.
