Prep roundup: Downers Grove South boys stopped in playoff opener

Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team thrives on 3-point shooting, and in Monday’s playoff opener against Batavia, those long distance shots weren’t falling. The Mustangs lost 59-52 to the Bulldogs in a Class 4A regional game at Plainfield East.

For the game, the Mustangs were 6-of-22 from 3-point range.

After a low-scoring first half, South led 19-18 at halftime. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 35-29 late in the third quarter, but Batavia scored five quick points before the end of the frame to slice the deficit to one point.

Paul Engo scored a game-high 16 points, Danny Spinuzza added 12 points and Kovas Rugienius tallied 10 points. South finished the season with an 11-14 record.


Downers Grove North

The Trojans saw their season come to an end Monday with a 51-41 loss against Hinsdale South in an opening-round game at the Class 4A Naperville Central regional. Devin Blake led the way with 15 points.

North had won three straight games heading into the playoffs. It finished the season with an 8-18 record.


Downers Grove South

Sophomore Michael Tegeler competed in both the 200-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke at the IHSA state meet over the weekend at Evanston High School.

Tegeler clocked a time of 1:43.61 in the 200 freestyle prelims on Friday and finished 15th overall. He was less than a half second away from a top-12, all-state finish and a state medal.

He placed 27th in the backstroke with a time of 53.48.

Senior Josh Jager had a strong showing in 1-meter diving, where he earned a score of 173.90 and finished 17th out of 47 competitors.

Downers Grove North

Senior John Derrig swam in the Friday’s preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke at the state swimming meet and recorded a time of 1:00.29 to finish 26th overall.
