EVANSTON – In a tightly contested boys swimming state meet, Hinsdale Central took third on Saturday.
The Red Devils earned a state trophy for the second year in a row and picked up nine medals in Saturday's finals, including top five in all three relays, at Evanston Township High School.
Junior Brian Portland was second in the 100-yard freestyle and competed in all three relays. The Red Devils were second in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay and fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
"It's a fantastic day," Portland said. "I couldn't have hoped for anything more. It's just an awesome day all around. Great swims from everybody here."
The Red Devils racked up 108 points, finishing 15 points back of champion Normal U-High and 12 behind runner-up Libertyville.
Freshman Franco Reyes made the finals in two races, taking fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
"I didn't expect to make two event finals," Reyes said. "I was ranked 20th in the breaststroke and I came sixth, which is a surprise. It was a good surprise."
Adam Pircon was 11th in the 500-yard freestyle and Brian Powell was 11th in the 50-yard freestyle.
Other area highlights:
• Max St. George represented the Wheaton co-op by qualifying in two events on Saturday. He was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and eighth in the 200-yard IM.
"I enjoyed it," St. George said. "I was a little bit nervous at the beginning, but once I got in the pool it was pretty fun. I just like to have fun."
• Riverside Brookfield junior Quinn Risley was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and helped the 200-yard freestyle relay take 11th.
"It's great to be here with the guys," Risley said. "I think we've got a really energetic team and it's always just fun to compete with the best."
• Weston Credit became the first Lyons Township swimmer to make it to Saturday since 2011 by taking 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke.
"I was shocked that I made it in the finals," Credit said. "I thought I had no chance to make it. I'm really glad that I did. First LT kid to make it back to Saturday in a couple years. I just can't wait for the next two years."
