NMCRS annual fund drive kicks off
Carol Ward, director of the Great Lakes Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS), welcomed Capt. Bill Bulis, commanding officer Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL), to the annual kick off for the Active Duty Fund Drive (ADFD) on Feb. 28 in the Society's office at Bldg. 26.
Bulis addressed key organizers and representatives from various NSGL commands. Bulis spoke of the value of NMCRS and its availability to assist Navy and Marine Corps service members.
NMCRS has partnered with the Navy and Marine Corps to help service members and their families through stressful emergencies and difficult financial times for the past 110 years. Assistance with travel for emergency leave is a common request made by Sailors and Marines. Great Lakes NMCRS gave out $745,723 in financial assistance last year. "The folks they give to are absolutely deserving," said Bulis. Globally NMCRS helped servicemembers last year with $48.6 million in Financial Assistance.
In addition to immediate financial aid, the program also has a non-financial side. NMCRS services include combat casualty assistance, visiting nurse care, baby budgeting workshops, elderly retiree and widows' assistance, and a thrift store that offers low-cost uniforms, civilian clothing and household items in Bldg. 26. "It is an amazing society that does great things," said Bulis.
Last year, Last year the ADFD raised $9.9 million across the service. ADFD contributions from Great Lakes were $643,006. This year, the goal at Great Lakes is to raise $700,000.
HMC Shante Moore, the Great Lakes region fund drive coordinator, told the assembled command representatives, "It is your fund drive. However you want to run it, do it your way. We only ask for 100 percent contact."
Ward showed off the fund drive's new website at www.nmcrsfunddrive.org. She demonstrated out how easy it is to use to the command representatives, and pointed out that, "You can access it at home!"
One of the fundraisers for NMCRS will be a golf outing at Willow Glen on April 25.
The 2014 NMCRS fund drive will continue through April 2014. See your command representative for more information on how you can get involved, or visit www.nmcrsfunddrive.org.
