The girls basketball season is nearing its end as the final two state championship games take place Saturday night. It’s the perfect time to celebrate the accomplishments of some of the top players from local schools with the 2013-14 girls basketball all-area team. The Cook all-area team is comprised of players from Fenwick, Lyons Township, Morton, Nazareth, Proviso West, Riverside Brookfield and St. Joseph.

Samantha Bloom

School: Riverside Brookfield

Year: Freshman

Impact: Bloom is one of the most exciting prospects in the area after a freshman season that outpaced even internal expectations at RB. The freshman guard showed excellent ballhandling skills and poise beyond her years while leading the team in scoring (14 points per game) and assists.

Mikaela Boyd

School: Proviso West

Year: Senior

Impact: The Toledo recruit was arguably the top player in the area until she went down with a season-ending injury on Jan. 31. Boyd, a guard, led the Panthers in points, assists and steals while also pulling in more than five rebounds per game.

Chanel Brown

School: St. Joseph

Year: Senior

Impact: Brown was a quality all-around player for the Chargers this season. The senior forward led St. Joseph in three statistics: Points per game (12.2), rebounds per game (7.0) and blocks (11). She was all-conference in the GCAC Red for the second time in her career.

Janae Dabney

School: Riverside Brookfield

Year: Junior

Impact: As a returning varsity starter, Dabney was one of the most experienced players on the young Bulldog squad this year. Her toughness and athletic ability helped her average 11.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and a team-high 2.3 steals per game while playing forward.

Maya Garland

School: Fenwick

Year: Senior

Impact: The UAB recruit was a mainstay for a Fenwick team that was devastated by injuries. As a talented and quick guard, Garland helped the Friars navigate their brutally tough schedule despite a shorthanded roster.

Jenny Mackowiak

School: Fenwick

Year: Junior

Impact: Mackowiak was an all-conference selection in the tough East Suburban Catholic Conference. The junior guard has the shooting ability to take over a game in a heartbeat and improved her ballhandling and driving ability this season.

Chloe Maietta

School: Morton

Year: Sophomore

Impact: Maietta took the reigns of the team in her second year on varsity. The sophomore point guard is part of a young core for the Mustangs. This season she averaged about 10 points per game and was all-conference in the West Suburban Gold.

Kayla Morrissey

School: Lyons Township

Year: Senior

Impact: The all-area MVP was the leader of a young Lions roster and earned an all-conference nod in the West Suburban Silver. Morrissey averaged 11.9 points and five rebounds per game while being an efficient shooter. She shot 50 percent from 3-point range.

Jules Raimondi

School: Nazareth

Year: Senior

Impact: The senior forward was Nazareth’s first all-conference player in the East Suburban Catholic Conference since the 2008-2009 school year. She helped the Roadrunners win a regional title for the second year in a row.

Victoria Swift

School: Lyons Township

Year: Junior

Impact: The junior guard had a bigger role on her third year on varsity and took advantage by leading the Lions in scoring at 12.5 points per game. She also was an all-conference player in the West Suburban Silver.

Maryam Wilcher

School: Morton

Year: Sophomore

Impact: Wilcher transferred to Morton this year and immediately became the Mustangs’ top player. The 6-footer is a tough match up for any opponent because of her length and guard skills. She averaged about 14 points per game and was all-conference in the West Suburban Gold.

Honorable mention

Fenwick: Jade Owens

Lyons Township: Nina Scaramella

Morton: Jasmine Morris

Nazareth: Katelyn Cahill

Proviso West: Nnenna Ezem and Jade Wright

Riverside Brookfield: Dana Rettke

St. Joseph: Deja Horn and Kietta Saunders
