District 2 expands Spanish language book collection

BENSENVILLE – District 2’s youngest readers will have more books to choose from in their native language next year thanks to a state grant.

The district was awarded a $5,000 Another Opportunity for Back 2 Books Grant, a competitive state grant, to purchase Spanish-language books for kindergarten through third-grade reading levels. 

At Tioga School, 66 percent of students report a home language of Spanish while 10 percent of the school library collection is Spanish titles.  At W.A. Johnson School, 44 percent of students indicate a home language of Spanish while 5 percent of the library collection is Spanish titles. 

Last year the district received a $3,000 grant to purchase Spanish language fiction chapter books and graphic novels for Blackhawk Middle School.
