WEST CHICAGO – A Wheaton resident was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday after being convicted of stabbing a man during a drug-related incident in West Chicago, officials said.

Martin Favela, 32, of the 0N000 block of Pleasant Hill Road, was convicted of aggravated battery after he stabbed a man in the face and chest at about 10:18 p.m. Dec. 29, 2012, said Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

Favela and other individuals were in a van when the victim tried to sell them drugs, Darrah said. Favela and the others took the drugs but refused to pay.

As the van began to drive away, the victim clung to it, and Favela then reached through a window and stabbed him, Darrah said. The victim recovered from the injuries.

"It was a drug deal gone bad," he said.

The aggravated battery, a class three felony, occurred on Allen Avenue in West Chicago, Darrah said.

In a separate incident, Favela was charged with manufacture and/or delivery of a controlled substance, a class one felony, at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 1, 2013, Darrah said.

Favela possessed more than one gram but less than 15 grams of heroin at the time of the arrest, he said.

The arrest occurred as part of an ongoing investigation into local drug activity that involved the use of a confidential informant, Darrah said.

Favela was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for this charge as well, he said. However, the two five-year sentences will be served at the same time.
