The boys basketball teams from both Fenwick and St. Joseph lost in the Catholic League semifinals on Feb. 19. When the two met for third place, Fenwick won 60-54.
Harrison Niego and Jaquan Phipps each scored 15 points in the Lions' 61-52 win over Proviso West on Friday. LT finished 6-6 in the West Suburban Silver.
RB knocked off Ridgewood 69-56 on senior night for the Bulldogs. Seniors Jack VandeMerkt (25 points, 11 rebounds) and Will Kincanon (18 points, seven assists, six rebounds) both had big games in their final home game. The next night the Bulldogs lost to St. Charles East 68-61 despite 25 points from Kincanon and double-doubles from VandeMerkt and Sam Johnson.
The Roadrunners improved to 3-4 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference by defeating Joliet Catholic 58-51 on Friday.
The Roadrunners defeated Wheaton Academy 58-41 to win a second consecutive Class 3A regional title. Nazareth played Montini in a sectional semifinal Tuesday.
The Friars picked up two wins at the Reavis regional, but fell in the final. Fenwick beat Curie 66-30 in a quarterfinal and then upset No. 5 seed Proviso East 79-69 in the semi before losing 48-42 to North Lawndale Charter.
Chanel Brown's 11 points weren't enough in the Chargers' 51-33 loss to Marshall in a Class 3A regional final. St. Joseph finished the season 12-17.
The Panthers dropped a regional semifinal to York, 58-48, on Feb. 19.
Freshman Johnny Mologousis lost both of his matches at the Class 3A state tournament over the weekend. Mologousis entered Tuesday's team sectional dual meet with a 37-13 record after losing two decisions by two points each at 145 pounds at state.
Nick Giurini went 0-2 at the Class 2A state tournament at 113 pounds. Antonio Ochoa lost his only match at 132 pounds.
Mike Kozyra split four matches at the Class 2A state tournament. The 170-pound senior made it to the quarterfinals of the main draw, but lost a 3-1 decision. He won one more match in the wrestlebacks before being eliminated.
The Lions qualified eight entries to state and were second at the Downers Grove North sectional. Brendan Weibel (500-yard freestyle) and Weston Credit (100 breaststroke) won sectional titles. Weibel also qualified in the 200 individual medley. Chris Phillips (100 breaststroke) and Ben Hewett (500 freestyle) also qualified along with divers Matt Benz and Seamus Scotty. Jack Garrow, Credit, Adam Kline and Matt Linden teamed up to qualify the 200 medley relay.
The Friars sent eight entries to the state meet from their own sectional, taking second place at the meet. Sophomore Cavan Smith won the 100-yard butterfly and senior Dave Durkin won diving. Other individual qualifiers were Zach Tieke (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Michael Hill (50 freestyle), Conor Fabian (100 breaststroke). The Friars also qualified two relays, the 200 medley relay, which won the sectional, and the 200 freestyle relay.
The combined team won its playoff opener 5-4 over Wildhawks, a co-op team from the Wheaton area, on Feb. 19. They will take on No. 4 seed Waubonsie in the round of 16 on March 9. Blake Gordon scored two goals to lead the way. Mike Jakubowski scored on a Mike Donnelly feed, Michael Helf scored on a Ben Wojtynek assist, and Wojtynek scored a goal on Patrick Boniecki's assist. Dom Slezak made 28 saves in net as the team improved to 13-13-2 on the season.
