Fire leaves Wheaton house uninhabitable
WHEATON – The Wheaton Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2 a.m. Sunday at 1228 S. Gamon Road, the severity of which rendered the building uninhabitable, according to a department news release.
Upon arrival, crews discovered an extensive fire in the attached garage of the single-family home, the release stated. Multiple vehicles were on fire in the driveway and the flames extended to the second floor of the house.
The residence was occupied at the time of the fire, according to the release, but those inside safely escaped without injury.
Firefighters brought the main body of the fire under control within 20 minutes, the release stated, but spent more time extinguishing the vehicle fires and other hot spots.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, according to the release. Damage estimates were unavailable as of Sunday morning, although the damage was extensive, the release stated.
The Wheaton Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Wheaton Police Department and other fire departments from neighboring communities, according to the release. Investigators from the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force assisted the department in conducting the fire investigation.
