Bolingbrook boys clinch conference title with win over H-F
BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook's basketball team isn't necessarily David, but it faced Goliath Friday night.
Hosting Homewood-Flossmoor in key SouthWest Suburban Blue conference game, the Raiders ended H-F's four year run as SWSB champs and captured their first conference title since the 2008-09 season with a 52-50 win.
1. Breaking the press
The Vikings had whittled Bolingbrook's 34-22 lead at the onset of the fourth quarter down to 47-44 on a 3-pointer with 35.5 seconds left and employed a full-court press in an effort to force turnovers. The Raiders broke the press immediately after the 3-pointer as Prentiss Nixon fed Kenny Williams for an emphatic dunk. After another H-F trey made it 49-47, Gage Davis eluded the press for a three-point play that made it a two-possession game.
2. Holding pattern
Bolingbrook's defense, which fluidly morphed from man to zone, goaded the Vikings into 4-of-9 shooting in the first quarter. In an attempt to draw the Raiders out of the zone they played the bulk of the first half, the Vikings employed a unique strategy – they did nothing. From about the 5:15 mark of the second quarter until there was 2:46 left in the half, H-F held the ball near midcourt. All 10 players on the court were stationary. The Vikings used the same tactic later in the half and held for a late shot, which missed the mark. They went into halftime trailing 22-12 and went 0-of-4 from the field in the second quarter.
