The fifth annual Open House at Downers Grove Township is set for Saturday, March 8.
In 2007, the State of Illinois legislature proclaimed the first full week in March as “Local Government Week."
Although residents are welcome to come in to their local government offices at any time, Local Government Week gives villages and townships an opportunity to highlight the programs and services provided to their constituents. This year, residents can come in from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to get a better view of township government and meet the staff and elected officials.
Many residents are quite familiar with village, county, state and federal government. What many people are unfamiliar with is their township. This is just one reason why the Township is excited for its Open House. It is an opportunity to talk with the people it serves and familiarize residents with the services that we have offered for decades.
Many areas within the township are unincorporated, ineligible for certain village services. The Highway Department fills in the gap in these areas by providing snow removal, brush pickup and road repair.
They have also have run an Electronic Recycling program the last four years. Since 2009, this program has recycled 87 tons of electronics, the same weight as 14 elephants. All that has been diverted from landfills thus helping our environment. The township also provides much needed assistance in the area of social services.
In tough economic times, the township has always been one to stand in and fill the gap for many who find themselves in financial need. From help with utility bills to rental assistance, we have a case manager who meets with residents and makes available whatever resources are appropriate.
We also have an active Human Services department that for over 30 years has served residents of all ages within the township with a variety of programs such as life skills, substance abuse and violence prevention, early intervention for juvenile offenders and services for senior citizens.
We are proud of the work that we do and would love to see our residents come out on March 8 and take a look around.
You can enjoy some freshly grilled hot dogs or some hot buttered popcorn, get your picture taken for a passport so you can get away from the cold Chicago weather, or just learn more about township government.
No matter what, we’ll be happy to see you!
Frank Wurster is the supervisor of Downers Grove Township.
